I have said that this symbol is essentially invariable in all Tarot sets, or at least the variations do not alter its character. The great angel is here encompassed by clouds, but he blows his bannered trumpet, and the cross as usual is displayed on the banner. The dead are rising from their tombs—a woman on the right, a man on the left hand, and between them their child, whose back is turned. But in this card there are more than three who are restored, and it has been thought worth while to make this variation as illustrating the insufficiency of current explanations. It should be noted that all the figures are as one in the wonder, adoration and ecstasy expressed by their attitudes. It is the card which registers the accomplishment of the great work of transformation in answer to the summons of the Supernal—which summons is heard and answered from within.

Herein is the intimation of a significance which cannot well be carried further in the present place. What is that within us which does sound a trumpet and all that is lower in our nature rises in response—almost in a moment, almost in the twinkling of an eye? Let the card continue to depict, for those who can see no further, the Last Judgment and the resurrection in the natural body; but let those who have inward eyes look and discover therewith. They will understand that it has been called truly in the past a card of eternal life, and for this reason it may be compared with that which passes under the name of Temperance.

The title Waite gives it is THE LAST JUDGMENT. An angel sounding a trumpet, a cross on the banner, the dead rising from their tombs — one of the most common scenes on medieval church facades and wall paintings. The textual basis is Matthew 24:31, where angels sound a trumpet and gather the elect, and 1 Thessalonians 4:16, with its trump and its resurrection. The image on this card comes from Christian eschatology. There is no second candidate.

Waite asks in this entry what it is within us that sounds the trumpet, so that all the lower nature rises in answer, "almost in a moment, almost in the twinkling of an eye." "In the twinkling of an eye" is from 1 Corinthians 15:52, in the passage about the last trump sounding and the dead being raised. He moves the phrase across in order to re-read the external Last Judgment as a call issuing from within.

The element of fire and the letter Shin

The Golden Dawn assigns Judgement to the element of fire and the Hebrew letter Shin. Like the Fool (air) and the Hanged Man (water), it takes one of the three elemental letters rather than a planet or a sign. The shape of Shin is often described as three tongues of flame, which matches the force the trumpet calls up.

Popular only since the twentieth century; unrelated to where the card came from

"Wake-up call" and karmic reckoning: modern vocabulary

The card is commonly read today as the soul's wake-up call, or as a final karmic reckoning. The first is in fact not far from Waite's point that the call is heard and answered from within; it simply swaps in a different vocabulary. The second is still the karmic frame that only exists after Theosophy, and is not the same thing as the Christian context of the Last Judgment. On this card someone is sounding a trumpet outside and someone is answering inside — collapsing the two into "the universe is settling your account" narrows it.
