The Woman

Lady · No. 29 · Playing card ♠A · The female querent

The card

A woman stands on the card, paired with the Gentleman as the other significator.

Traditional meaning

Traditionally the Lady represents the querent if female, or the significant woman in their life.

How to read it

What matters most about card 29 is what sits between the two significators. How far apart they fall in the layout is how close the relationship is; whatever lies between them is what stands between the two people — the Snake is a third party, the Mountain a barrier, the Ring an obligation. Read which way they face, too: turned towards each other is moving together, turned away is going separate ways. Card 29 alone tells you who; only its position relative to card 28 tells you how things stand.

In context

Common combinations

Lenormand meanings were first written down in the instruction sheet issued around 1846 by Philippe Lenormand, heir of Marie-Anne Lenormand, and that sheet has long been in the public domain. The "Traditional meaning" section here describes the classical reading handed down from that line, in our own words — it is not a verbatim quotation of the sheet. Card images are public-domain scans of Das Spiel der Hoffnung (1799).
