The Dog

Dog · No. 18 · Playing card ♥10 · Friendship, loyalty, companions

The card

A dog stands facing outward, settled in its posture. It is the least aggressive animal in the deck.

Traditional meaning

Traditionally the Dog is a loyal friend, and someone who can be relied on.

How to read it

The Dog is "the person you can count on": a friend, a partner, the one who has supported you for a long time. It does not push events along; it tells you who is beside you. It also stands for loyalty itself — asked about fidelity, the Dog is a positive answer.

Common combinations

Lenormand meanings were first written down in the instruction sheet issued around 1846 by Philippe Lenormand, heir of Marie-Anne Lenormand, and that sheet has long been in the public domain. The "Traditional meaning" section here describes the classical reading handed down from that line, in our own words — it is not a verbatim quotation of the sheet.
