Birth chart vs. horoscope: what is the difference?
A birth chart uses a particular date, time, and place to show placements at birth. A typical sun-sign horoscope is written for a whole sign. To learn chart reading, start by identifying a planet, its sign, and, when the time is reliable, its house.
Sign, planet, and house answer different questions
In astrology, a planet is the part being interpreted, a sign describes how it is expressed, and a house gives the area of life being discussed. For a fictional example, write three separate notes about Mercury, its sign, and its house before trying to join them in a sentence.
What can I read without a birth time?
Treat the Ascendant and houses as undetermined if the time is unknown. A noon placeholder cannot establish them. The Moon can change signs during the day, so check its placement at both ends of the possible time range before using it.
Why two charts can show different houses
A house system divides the chart in its own way. Compare birth location, local time and time zone first, then check the zodiac and house system. Record the setting beside the example so that another reader can reproduce it.
A practice exercise for reading a chart
Open an example chart and locate one planet. Write what you can directly read from the chart, then write your symbolic interpretation on a separate line. Change the house system and check which part of your reading would need revision.

BESTAROT prepared the example for study. Astrodienst documents the differences between house systems. The exercise treats astrological interpretations as symbolic conventions.
