Learn Astrology and Read a Birth Chart

Quick answer

Read a birth chart by combining a planet’s symbolic function, its sign’s expression and its house’s life area, then connect them through aspects. Practise this sequence in six lessons with a reproducible example, using the tropical zodiac and Whole Sign houses.

Start by reading the chart

Six lessons connect planets, signs, houses and aspects, then turn them into observations you can check.

This course teaches modern Western astrological symbolism using the tropical zodiac and whole-sign houses. Symbolic readings are not scientifically validated personality diagnoses or certain predictions.

01 Read the map first

Separate true longitude, labels, houses and aspect lines.

The zodiac is a 360° circle divided into twelve 30° signs. Longitude is measured from Aries 0°.

A sign and degree locate a planet. House numbers identify divisions; aspect lines describe angular relationships. These are different kinds of information.

Crowded labels move to avoid overlap; their true ticks do not. Follow each leader. Without an exact birth time, leave the Ascendant and houses out.

  1. Planet: what function
  2. Sign: how it is expressed
  3. House: which life area
  4. Aspect: how points relate

Worked example

The teaching Sun is at Capricorn 21°23′, about 291.39° total longitude. This is not house 21.

Common mistake: Do not infer longitude from a displaced label’s screen position.

Try it

Use the four questions in the formula to separate the information. Inspect the calculated chart in lesson six.

Check your understanding

What does the degree in “Capricorn 21°23′” describe?

  1. House 21
  2. Position within Capricorn
  3. The Sun’s age in years
Check answer

Degrees within a sign run from 0° to less than 30°. They describe position, not a house or an age.

02 Planets: the function

Describe functions without assigning good or bad labels.

Here, the astrological “planets” include the Sun, Moon and Pluto. This differs from the astronomical classification of planets.

Start with solar self-expression, lunar needs and Mercurial communication. Slow planets share a sign with many people born in the same period.

℞ marks apparent retrograde motion seen from Earth. It is not a reversal of orbital travel or a guarantee of misfortune.

PlanetSymbolic function
SunSelf-expression and will
MoonEmotional needs and habits
MercuryThinking, language and exchange
VenusValues, relating and aesthetics
MarsAction, assertion and boundaries
JupiterExpansion, beliefs and learning
SaturnStructure, responsibility and limits
UranusChange, independence and innovation
NeptuneImagination, ideals and blurred boundaries
PlutoPower, deep change and rebuilding

Worked example

In “Mercury in Gemini in house 3”, identify thinking and communication first, then add style and life area.

Common mistake: “Saturn is always bad” and “Jupiter guarantees luck” replace observation with a label.

Try it

Choose one body and write a function instead of a personality judgment.

Check your understanding

Which part of “Mercury in Gemini in house 3” gives the function?

  1. Mercury
  2. Gemini
  3. House 3
Check answer

The planet supplies a function, the sign a style and the house a life area.

03 Signs: the style

Recognise 30° signs, four elements and three modalities.

Tropical signs are coordinate sectors, not identical to the boundaries of the constellations with the same names. Birth-date tables cannot locate every planet.

Fire, earth, air and water offer symbolic prompts for action, grounding, thought and feeling. Cardinal, fixed and mutable suggest beginning, sustaining and adapting.

These are descriptive categories, not rankings of ability or morality. A Sun sign is only one part of a chart.

SignElementModality
AriesFireCardinal
TaurusEarthFixed
GeminiAirMutable
CancerWaterCardinal
LeoFireFixed
VirgoEarthMutable
LibraAirCardinal
ScorpioWaterFixed
SagittariusFireMutable
CapricornEarthCardinal
AquariusAirFixed
PiscesWaterMutable

Worked example

Capricorn combines earth and cardinal symbolism: consider grounding and initiating without assuming guaranteed success.

Common mistake: A Sun-sign description cannot be pasted onto every planet in that sign.

Try it

Find what Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces share in the reference table.

Check your understanding

How many degrees does one tropical sign occupy?

  1. 12°
  2. 90°
  3. 30°
Check answer

Twelve equal sectors make 360°, so each sign occupies 30°.

04 Houses: the area

Distinguish whole-sign boundaries, the Ascendant and the MC.

In whole-sign houses, the entire rising sign is house 1. The next sign is house 2, and so on.

Houses organise life topics. An empty house does not mean that area is absent. House 1 is not simply another name for Aries.

The Ascendant usually lies inside house 1. The MC is a separate angle and need not be the tenth-house boundary. Birth time, place and time zone matter.

HouseLife area
1Self-presentation and initiative
2Personal resources, income and values
3Everyday communication and basic learning
4Home, roots and private space
5Creativity, play and self-expression
6Daily tasks, work and bodily care
7One-to-one relationships and negotiation
8Shared resources, dependence and depth
9Higher learning, journeys and worldview
10Public role, vocation and responsibility
11Friends, groups and shared hopes
12Solitude, retreat and less visible patterns

Worked example

The teaching Ascendant is Taurus 2°22′. House 1 starts at Taurus 0°; Capricorn is house 9, containing the Sun.

Common mistake: Starting house 1 at the exact Ascendant degree describes a different rule, not whole-sign houses.

Try it

Count from Taurus to Capricorn to verify the ninth house.

Check your understanding

With Taurus rising, where does whole-sign house 1 begin?

  1. At the exact Ascendant degree
  2. Taurus 0°
  3. Aries 0°
Check answer

The boundary is 0° of the rising sign; the Ascendant retains its own exact degree.

05 Aspects: the relationship

Calculate shortest angular distance and understand an orb.

Find the absolute longitude difference, then take the smaller of that number and 360° minus it. This handles the Aries 0° boundary.

Conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition have exact angles of 0°, 60°, 90°, 120° and 180°. An orb is deviation from an exact aspect angle.

Maximum accepted orbs vary by software. Geometry is calculable; descriptions such as tension or ease are symbolic, not guarantees of outcomes.

Angle diagram, not a personal chart

Major aspectsExact angle
Conjunction0°
Sextile60°
Square90°
Trine120°
Opposition180°

Worked example

The teaching Sun–Mercury conjunction has a 0.95° orb. The Moon–Mars trine has about a 3.49° orb, not a 3.49° separation.

Common mistake: Line length, colour and crossings do not directly predict events.

Try it

Explore the five diagrams, then calculate the shortest distance between 315° and 45°.

Check your understanding

What is the shortest distance between 315° and 45°?

  1. 90°
  2. 270°
  3. 30°
Check answer

The difference is 270°, so the shorter arc is 360°−270°=90°, an exact square.

06 Build a careful reading

Check calculated positions before proposing an interpretation.

Combine planet function, sign style and house area, then add an aspect. Separate the calculated facts from interpretation.

Sun in Capricorn in house 9 can become a question: how do I build structure and express direction through learning or worldview? It is not a fate statement.

Compare Moon in Leo in house 4. Check birth data and lived experience, including examples that do not fit your first interpretation.

Check the teaching chart

Fixed teaching conditions: 12 January 2020, 12:00, Shanghai, Asia/Shanghai, 31.2304°N / 121.4737°E. Calculated by this site, not a real person’s chart.

Select the Sun, Moon and Mercury in turn. Check their degrees, houses and aspects with the chart selector.

  1. Record the zodiac, house system, time zone and birth-time accuracy.
  2. Copy Sun and Moon positions before interpreting them.
  3. Check an aspect’s angular distance and its deviation from the exact angle.
  4. Ask an open question; look for examples and counterexamples.

Worked example

Facts: Sun Capricorn 21°23′, house 9; Moon Leo 9°24′, house 4. Write separate questions about learning and private emotional life.

Common mistake: House 9 does not guarantee travel; an aspect does not prove a relationship will succeed or fail.

Try it

Select Sun, Moon and Mercury in the teaching chart. Compare highlights with the table before using your own chart.

Check your understanding

Which reading process is more careful?

  1. Determine fate from the Sun alone
  2. Assign a rising sign without a time
  3. Check positions, then write testable observations
Check answer

Verify positions first, use open questions and let counterexamples revise the interpretation.

Questions about learning

Can I learn without an exact birth time?

Start with planets, signs and angles. This site uses local noon as a reference and omits the Ascendant and houses. The Moon and its aspects may also change during the day.

Why does another app give different houses?

Compare time zone, daylight saving, coordinates, zodiac and house system. This course uses whole-sign houses; another app may use Placidus. Different settings do not establish predictive accuracy.

Does completing this course prove predictive ability?

No. These lessons practise symbols, geometry and careful language. A single planet or aspect is not a fixed verdict about a person.
