The Moon

Moon · No. 32 · Playing card ♥8 · Intuition, reputation, emotions

The card

A moon hangs in a night sky. Against the Sun, its light is soft and reflected.

Traditional meaning

Traditionally the Moon is reputation, honour and emotion, and is linked with night and with cycles.

How to read it

The Moon has two layers: outwardly reputation and recognition — being seen, having a name; inwardly emotion and intuition. It is one of the few cards in the deck that governs both the public face and the private feeling. It also means a month, and things that run in cycles.

In context

Love

A deep emotional bond, or a partner who cares about their standing in your eyes.

Work

Reputation, personal brand, creative work; recognition within a field.

Timing

A month, or a monthly cycle.

Common combinations

Lenormand meanings were first written down in the instruction sheet issued around 1846 by Philippe Lenormand, heir of Marie-Anne Lenormand, and that sheet has long been in the public domain. The "Traditional meaning" section here describes the classical reading handed down from that line, in our own words — it is not a verbatim quotation of the sheet.
