Elemental Interactions in Play

The first thread that ties lone cards into sentences

The first four chapters taught the temperaments of fire, water, air and earth; in a spread they either back each other up or trip each other. Elemental relations are modifiers, not conclusions — read each card in its position first, then use the interactions to explain the push or friction between cards.

Prerequisite: Ch.1 · The Four Elements

Feeding

Fire + air fan each other — thought accelerates action, action gives ideas an outlet. Water + earth nourish and ground — feeling gets practical backing, practice is warmed by feeling.

Clashing

Fire + water quench each other — impulse against emotion reads as inner drain. Air + earth stall — ideas and reality refuse to yield: spinning wheels, rigidity, plans on paper. A clash is not "doom"; it means these two energies take work to reconcile.

A run of one suit

One element in a pile = a theme both intense and narrow. A board full of Cups is feeling-led — and a hint that other dimensions are absent. The absent element is very often where the problem sits.

e.g. A career spread all Pentacles: thoroughly practical — but where are the fire (drive) and the air (communication)?

Fire and air feed

Air fans fire: thought accelerates action, action gives ideas an outlet.

Water and earth nourish

Earth holds water: feeling gets practical backing, practice is warmed by feeling.

Fire and water clash

Impulse and emotion quench each other: read as inner drain and pulling — reconciling takes work.

Air and earth stall

Ideas and reality refuse to yield: spinning wheels, rigidity, plans on paper.

A run of one suit

One element piled up = an intense, narrow theme; the absent element is often exactly where the problem sits.
