How to read each position

Past

The events, choices or feelings that led here and still carry weight. Look at what this card set in motion: upright often names a foundation you can build on, reversed something unfinished or still being carried. Its link to card 2 shows how the past is feeding the present.

Present

Where things stand now, the pivot of the arrow and the card you can act on most directly. Compare its suit and tone with card 1. Continuity suggests the story is still unfolding in the same direction; a sharp contrast suggests a turning point has already happened.

Future

The direction things tend to move if the line from card 1 through card 2 continues. It is a trajectory, not a fixed destination, so a reversed or difficult card here is an invitation to look at what could change in card 2. A Major Arcana card suggests a more significant shift ahead.

Common mistakes

• Read the three cards as one sentence with a verb, 'from 1, through 2, toward 3', rather than as three isolated meanings.
• Don't treat the Future card as a guarantee. It shows the momentum of the present, and if the present changes, the arrow can bend.
• Put a timeframe in your question (the next month, this year). Without one, the Future card is hard to anchor.
• If the Past card seems irrelevant, ask what you have been reluctant to connect to the question. People often skip the part of the past that matters most.

Worked example
