Story line: After 9 reaches the top, 10 walks to the end of the cycle.

Nine of Wands

Meaning: Holding on while wounded: the last line of defence, and no letting go

REVERSED

finally able to put it down, guarding to the point of paranoia, running on empty until you break

Two directions: the alert is over and the armour can come off (good), or the guard is up so high it keeps allies outside the wall too, and you hold on until you collapse (bad).

Nine of Cups

Meaning: The satisfaction of a wish granted: a little smug, and it was worth it

REVERSED

the wish falls through, satisfaction that doesn't last, indulgence taken too far

Plenty of cups and none of them fill you: you got it and it did not make you happy, or the pleasure ran to excess — this reversal asks whether this was really what you wanted.

Nine of Swords

The most important of the good reversals: the nightmare has run its course — the fear is almost always bigger than the reality, and it scatters once you tell someone and let the light in.
